50% 05, 33% 04 and 17% 03 vintage. Bottles 2006, Deg  27th May 2014. Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, light yeast note nose, slightly fuller nose than earlier blends. Fresh acidity, elegant mousse, fresh and fruity, elegant, lively, more rounded than earlier again on the palate. Long. 91

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, fresh and fruity, elegant nose. Fresh acidity, rounded, elegant, fresh and fruity, light tropical fruit, lovely balance. 86

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, elegant and fruity nose, lighter, detailed. Fresh acidity, fruity, rounded, elegant, fresh, lovely balance again, slightly fuller finish. 88

Deep ruby. Ripe, rich, fruity, layered, liquorice, chocolate and dark berries. Freshish acidity, ripe tannins. Rich, sweet, fruity, ripe, blueberries, spices, bit warm. 89

2009 Lucien le Moine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Arioso
Ruby. Rich, intense, fruity, ripe nose, some alcohol high notes. Fresh acidity, ripe and fruity, red and darker berries, nuanced even in this rich state, more nuanced than last time I tasted it. Big and not for me, but impressive Neuf. 92

2010 Pieropan Amarone della Valpolicella
Ruby. Coffee, rich and fruity nose, intense nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, rich and fruity but balanced, intense, clean fruit, warm finish. Amarone rarely gets more balanced than this. 88

2011 Niepoort Vintage Bioma
Opaque. Rich, intense nose, dark berries, big and compact. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe, sweet fruits, layered, intense, complex, needs lots of cellaring to show everything but smacking already, long. 95

Pale bright ruby. Lovely red berries and faintly scented nose, delicate and detailed, more intense with air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant and light texture and palate, more intense fruit, lovely balance, quite mouthwatering, long. 93

Ruby. Cassis, starting cedar notes, some tobacco and leather, detailed nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, youthful and fresh palate, bit lean and slightly raw texture without air, long. 91

1967 Fontanafredda Barolo Vigna La Villa
In neck fill. Pale ruby with brick rim and lots of sediments. Earthy, touch of prunes, very oxidized. Acidic and lean palate, drying finish.

1964 Mirafiore Barolo
In neck fill. Cloudy brick. Dry and dusty nose, some earth and wet mud nose, slight tar and roses note fat back. Lean and thin, dry.


1952 Fontanafredda Barbaresco
Almost in neck fill. Watery red with orange rim and lots of sediments. Tar, roses and dusty nose, some cherries. Fresh acidity, few tannins, leaner palate, still balanced if lacking in complexity, good length. Must have been very good. 86

1990 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva Pora
Ruby, broad orange rim. Oxidative nose of tar and roses, very mature, slightly figgy and sherry notes. Fresh acidity, lean and dry.


1988 Clos Fourtet
Bottom neck fill. Ruby. Lovely and elegant floral nose, detailed, layered, seductive nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, leaner palate but playful and detailed, lovely freshness, not the most complex but very charming indeed, long. 92

1986 Château Talbot
Very top shoulder fill. Ruby, very thin brick rim. Youthful, fresh and detailed nose, layered, complex, leather, cassis, superb nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, some sweet and ripe notes and still fresh and vigorous, detailed again, layered, superb, refined, superb bottle. Very long. 96

Golden. Apricots, light caramel note, especially light for producer and vintage, tropical and some fried pineapples nose. Fresh acidity, fruity, fresh and rounded mid palate, bit more edgy finish, long. 92

1991 Hutcheson Vintage Port
Slightly cloudy ruby with garnet rim. Some figs, dark berries and alcohol note nose. Fresh acidity, some figs and fairly fruity palate overshadowed by a bit obvious alcohol. Good length. 89

1977 Dow's Vintage Port
Very pale brick. Plums, figs, dades, some dark notes. Fresh acidity, tannins gone, bit alcoholic, dried fruits, not to complex, long. 90

2011 Henri Boillot Bourgogne Blanc:
Pale lemon yellow. Easy going nose, some lemons and a bit rich nose, slightly smoky. Fresh acidity, fruity, rounded, easy going, relatively fresh. 85

2007 Albert Bichot Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir:
Towards lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, slightly tight, some floral notes, touch yellow fruity, vanilla and some butter. Fresh acidity, fruity, quite oaky texture, bit dry, lacks the nuances and freshness it should have in this vintage. 88 (another bottle tasted a few days later did not seem overoaked, so not a top bottle)

Towards lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, some nuts and butter, fairly nuanced, almost focused nose. Fresh acidity, fruity, lemony, rounded, bit lean and could be more complex, again a bit oaky finish. Long. 91

2007 Matrot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux:
Towards lemon yellow. Citrus, slightly floral, minerals, apples, fresh and youthful if not too intense nose. Some vanilla. Fresh acidity, fruity, rounded, buttery, some spices and vanilla, slightly drying finish if I'm picky, good length. 89


2007 J. M. Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux:
Towards lemon yellow. Apples, citrus, some floral notes, elegant and youthful nose, fresh. Fresh acidity, fruity, minerals, cool fruit, fairly delicate but could have bit less oak, fresh and citrusy finish. 92

2007 Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevriéres:
Pale lemon yellow. Probably slightly off bottle, some apples, minerals, almost corked note but the wine do not deteriorate further. Freshish acodity, fruity, lemony, easy going palate, stayed like that for an hour.

2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne:
Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, delicate, nuanced, little evolurion since last bottle eight months ago. Fresh acidity, fruity, nuanced, elegant, refreshing, lively, delicate, layers upon layers, long. 95

2007 Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollières:
Bright ruby. Scented, red berries, quite delicate nose, some cherties and a slight floral note. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, ripeish, fruity, but fairly fresh, good balance and good length. Lovely wine. Fading after an hour. 89


2007 Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées:
Bright ruby. Red berries, slightly scented, some herbal notes, quite fresh and elegant nose. Fresh acidity. Ripe tannins, bit herbal and lean but refreshing, could be more nuanced and detailed, good length. Red berries. Lovely wine, more joy than the qualitative score. Fading after an hour. 88

2007 Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens:
(Magnum) Bright ruby. Herbal, nettles, slightly unripe wild strawberries, slightly scented, slightly spicy nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, velvety texture, if leaner palate, quite elegant, good length. 89

2007 Benjamin Leroux Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey:
Bright ruby. Red berries, some coffee, vanilla, a bit weird nose, sulphur, blowing off, but never clean. Reductive. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and fresh, bit lean, dryish finish. 85

2007 Frederic Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale:
Bright ruby. Redcurrants, fresh strawberries, some scented notes. Opening with air, spicy and some vanilla. Lovely nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh if leanish and lively, quite elegant texture if still slightly rough tannins, long if a bit hollow finish. 90





2007 Thiebault Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas:

Bright ruby. Scented, red berries, delicate scented note actually, detailed and nuanced nose, refreshing. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, bit lean and lacks a bit in the finish, good length. 89

2007 Domaine Bertagna Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts:
Bright ruby. Some dark berries, scented, deeper nose, lacks nuances and freshness. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, soft, easy and a bit ripe, easy going. 86

2007 Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Sichots:
Bright ruby. Red berries, scented, eleagnt nose, fairly rich, nuanced, very slight herbal note. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, soft and elegant, refreshing, lively, quite seductive, refreshing, long finish. 93

2007 Chandon de Briailles Corton les Bressandes:
Light bright ruby. Rustic. Herbal, tight, vanilla, woody nose, lacks fruit. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, lean and easy, oaky, tight, has it got enough fruit. Lean and skinny. 87

2007 Thiebault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot:
Bright ruby. Scented, red berries, slightly spicy, fairly nuanced, a bit rustic nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, red berries, quite elegant texture, fresh and fruity, if a bit lean, elegant if lacking a bit of nuances. Long. 92


2007 Domaine Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin:
Bright ruby. Red berries, herbal notes, slightly scented, some ripe over tones. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fairly refreshing, rounded, not quite together for this vineyard, long. Bit showy oak. 91

2005 Niepoort Vintage:
Deep ruby, almost opaque, lots of sediments. Rich, scented, dark berries nose, really youthful nose, some figs and vanilla with air and more temperature. Fresh acidity, tipe tannins, fruity, intense, rich, fruity,

2000 Oremus Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos:
Golden. Apples, apricots, some nuts and raisins, developed, elegant nose, ever so slightly floral. Fresh acidity, lively, delicate, fresh, fruity, rounded, elegant, youthful and long. Served blind, I had no idea what it was. Oh yes you had:) 93

2007 Gere Kopar:
70 CS, 20 M, 10 CF. Ruby, garnet rim. Red berries, slightly scented, vanilla, cassis and leather nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity if a bit hollow, bit oaky, spicy finish. 85

The 07 red Burgundies that was tried after a few hours were all collapsing in a smaller or larger state, so drink soon, further cellaring might be risky.

Deep ruby, almost opaque. Rich nose, ripe, dark berries, vanilla, spices, big nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, rich, bit heavy, creamy texture, warm finish. 88

Noval Tawny Reserve:
Bright garnet. Some figs and dried fruits, anise. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, liqorice, red berries and rounded palate, leaner and refreshing. 86

Noval Black Port NV:
Dark ruby. Fruity, rich, blackberries, slight vanilla and spices note on the nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, rounded, fruity, smooth, good length. 87

2008 Quinta do Noval Unfiltered LBV:
Dark ruby. Rich, fruity, plums, black- and blueberries nose, vanilla and spices. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, sweet, ripe and intense, refreshing, smooth and rounded, long. 90

Noval 10 Years Old Tawny:
Bright garnet. Fogs, prunes, liquorice, somewhat jammy nose. Fresh acidity, lively, delicate, nuanced, rich and fresh, red berries not that complex and a bit short. 88

Noval 20 Years Old Tawny:
Garnet with brick rim. Anise, prunes, plums, rich, alcohol a bit showy on the nose. Fresh acidity, cherries, figs, red berries, some woody notes, slightly spicy, warm finish. 88

2000 Quinta do Noval Colheita:
Bright garnet, brick rim. Dark berries, prunes, figs, leather notes and anise. Fresh acidity, ripe, rich and fruity, more rounded, quite elegant and refreshing, long. 90

2008 Quinta do Noval Vintage:
Deep ruby. Dark berries, rich, intense, fruity, black- and blueberries, heavy and deep fruit. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, sweet, rounded, lovely balance, liquorice, sweet, long finish. 93

2003 Quinta do Noval Vintage:
Deep ruby. Prunes, figs, liquorice, vanilla, rich nose with alcohol high notes. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, fairly detailed, evolving, again a bit showy alcohol if I'm picky, sweet anise and chocolate finish, long. 92

2011 Niepoort Vintage Port


2011 Niepoort Vintage Port:
Almost black. Ripe blackberries, intense, fruity, complex, I would even say dense nose, or compact. Fresh and lively acidity, ripe tannins, intense and ipe, again quite dense, fresh and fruity, still manages to be lively, very long. Together with the 03 that I have only tasted once, this must be the best vintage that Dirk have made so far. 95

Wine & Soul, Chocopalha and the excellent Pintas Ports


2011 Chocapalha Reserva White:
Pale lemon yellow. Lilies of the valley, apples, some minerals and vanilla nose, very slight butter note behind. Fresh acidity, elegant texture, fruity, somewhat rich but balanced, lemony mineral finish, good length. Unfortunatelly the summer is over, this is a terrace winner. 89

2012 Wine & Soul Guru White:
Pale lemon yellow. Some yellow fruits, lemons, floral notes, minerals, grapefruit and some smoky notes. Fresh acidity, fresh, almost creamy texture, lemony minerality, fresh and lively, needs air to open, good length. 89

2010 Mar de Lisboa:
Ruby. Dark and red berries, slightly spicy and peppery nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fairly soft, slightly lean, but hey, it doesn't cost much. A quaffer. 82

2008 Quinta de Chocapahla:
Ruby. Scented, minty, dark berries, ever so slight floral note, subdued minerals below. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, bit tight, fruity, red berries, good length. 86

2009 Quinta da Chocapahla:
Ruby. Rich, ripe, scented and fruity nose. Some mint. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, ripe, not quite as rich palate as nose, good length. I preffer the cooler 08 personally. 86

2009 Chocopalha Vinha Māe:
Deep ruby. Dark berries, ripe and fruity, some vanilla and coffee on the nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, slight rustic note mid palate before a smoother finish, rich finish. Good length. 88

2010 CH by Chocapalha:
2000 bottles made. Deep ruby. Dark berries, liquorice, almost extracted blackberries and vanilla nose, spicy. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe and sweet, rounded, vanilla, smooth texture, bit warm finish, long. 89

2011 Wine & Soul Manoella:
Deep ruby. Ripe, rich,fruity, blackberries, spicy, vanilla, intense nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, less rich than the nose, fairly smooth, not that long. 89


2011 Pintas Character:
Deep ruby. Ripe, fruity, blackberries, some spices, vanilla and alcohol notes on top. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, alcohol shines through on the palate, sweetish, rich, quite smooth fruit, but even if tbe alcohol shines through, the finish is more balanced and not that warm. Good length. 89

2011 Pintas Douro Red:
Dark ruby. Ripe blackberries, ripe morellos, touch of anise, spices and vanilla with just a ever so slight herbal note on top. Freshish acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, anise and some stone from stone fruit, slightly woody, long. 91

2011 Wine & Soul Quinta da Manoella VV:
3000fl Deep ruby. Rich, fruity, blackberries, floral notes, vanilla, scented and ripe nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, rounded and fruity, vanilla, more together than last bottle last week, this one got two and a half hours in decanter that really rounded it off, long. 91

Wine & Soul 10 Years old Tawny:
Ruby with thin garnet rim. Dried fruits, figs, quite intense ten years old tawny, touch of nuts and Christmas spices nose. Fresh acidity, elegant, fresh and fairly fruity tawny, elegant, lovely and long. 90

2009 Wine & Soul Pintas Vintage Port:

2011 Wine & Soul Pintas Vintage Port:
4000 bottles made. Deep ruby. Dark berries, even a red berries note on top, layererd, rich yes, but also nuanced nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh and lively, quite playful, quite gorgeous, smooth and very long, I can take two cases of this since I'm at it. 95

Andresen 40 Year Old White Port:
Amber. Minerals, ripe lemons touch, dried apricots, floral high notes, more subdued nose. Fresh acidity, almonds, fruity, sweeter palate, rounded, long and nicely balanced. 92

1980 Andresen Porto Colheita:
Dark amber, golden rim. Fruity, caramel, dried fruits, raisins and some nuts nose. Fresh acidity, quite intense, oxidative, bit short and falls a bit apart in the finish. 89

Pale lemon yellow, small bubbles. Apples, minerals, focused nose. Fresh acidity, elegant mousse, fresh and a bit tight palate, good length. 88

2010 Maison Roche de Bellene Saint Aubin 1er Cru Les Chatenières:
Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals and elegant nose. Fresh acidity, elegant body, on the rich and fruity side, good length. 87

2010 Maison Roche de Bellene Meursault Les Charron:
Towards lemon yellow. Apples, minerals and vanilla on the nose. Fresh acidity, elegant body, rounder first, then more lively finish, good length. 89

2010 Roc de Cambes:
Ruby. Fruity nose, cassis, a bit more in a ball now than earlier bottles, needs more air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, a bit on the rich side, needs many years to settle, oak is a bit showy at this stage. Give it ten years plus in the cellar. 90

2008 Alion:
Ruby. Scented, blueberries and licorice. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe fruity and long. Give it five plus years to settle or lots of air. 90

2008 Pintia:
Deep ruby. Rich and ripe nose, blueberries and the for me typical Pintia pine cones. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, rich and slightly sweet, long. 89

2009 Niepoort Late Bottles Vintage:
Ruby. Rich and fruity nose, nuanced. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, slightly riper feel than the 07, but manages to stay nuanced, long finish. 90+

Pale lemon yellow. Apples, minerals, a bit tight nose. Fresh acidity, elegant fruit and texture even if a bit ripe and yellow fruity, good length. 89

2006 Francois Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1erCru Les Charmes:
Bright ruby. Barrel notes and plums.fresh acidity. More elegant body, not as vulgar as another 06 1er Cru a few weeks back, good length. 88

2007 Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de laMaréchale:
Tasted this several times lately, this one decanted for about an hour, elegant ruby, scented nose, more open than last two bottles. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, elegan and quite lively, one of the tighter 07's that needs a bit of air. 91+

2008 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru:
Ruby. Scented and fruity after an hour in decanter. Fresh acidity, lively, ripe tannins, elegant fruit, needs a few years to settle it seems, long. 92

2007 Conceito Vintage Port:
Deep ruby. Fruity and deep nose, chocolates, layered. Fresh acidity, lively, elegant, long and fairly playful Vintage Port. 93

2005 Conceito Vintage Port:
Deep ruby. Again deep fruity nose, fruitier than the 07, more full bodied. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, rich and layered, more power but lacks the elegance. 92

Deep ruby. Coffee, dark berries, floral, vanilla, deep nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, rich and fairly full, refreshing and long. 88

2010 La Dame de Montrose:
Deep ruby. Floral, cassis, spices, vanilla, layered nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, balanced, rich and still elegant, very long. 90

2010 Château Montrose:
Deep ruby. Superb nose, complex, cassis, has everything. Fresh acidity, high of ripe tannins, ripe fruit, superb texture, will evolve over the next thirty years plus. Very long. 95

Taylor's 20 Year old Tawny:
Amber with pink hue. Figs, dades, raisins and something tropical. Fresh acidity, balanced, fruity, long finish. 91

Ruby. Fruity, some green notes and licorice. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, soft and fruity feel with slightly dry feel at the back. Good length. 85

Redcurrants red. Some rubber and cooked fruit. Freshish acidity, a bit flat mousse, easy and simple. 78

2010 Chapoutier Rasteau:
Deep ruby. Spicy, peppery, blackberries and vanilla. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, slightly herbal and rosemary finish. Good length. 86

Watery lemon yellow. Easygoing apples and some citrus notes. Fresh acidity, elegant and nicely balanced, good length. 81

2007 Niepoort LBV:
Deep ruby. Intense nose of cherries, blackberries, plums, some spices and vanilla. Layered and scented. Fresh acidity, lively, ripe tannins, lovely balance, intense and very long. 94

Fortnum & Mason Old Silver Tea Pot:
Blend from the 1914 Christmas Catalogue of Ceylon and Darjeeling. An elegant and refined black tea that have become a favorite lately when something smooth is required. 

Fortnum & Mason Empire Blend Tea:
Another historic tea, blended from Ceylon, India and East Africa teas. First presented in 1934 to Queen Mary by the Empire Tea Growers. A floral, somewhat herbal and quite intense black tea, that is also smooth. But can easily become tannic and bitter if brewed to long and/ or hot. 

2007 Quinta do Noval Berry's Own Selection LBV:
Deep ruby. Sweet and fruity nose, ripe, nuanced and layered. Fresh acidity, leaner body than nose, refshing, good length. 89

1999 Château Saint- Pierre:
Ruby, garnet rim. Closed first. After twenty minutes a scented cassis and blueberries with a touch of anise and violets. Lovely nose. But there are some barrel notes in the mix that is a bit anoying. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, and again, oak is a bit too aparent. Lovely fruit, and hidden. Luckily, it only took another twenty minutes of air. A lovely Claret. 90

Floral and elegantly scented Earl Grey.

Mariage Frères Darjeeling Princeton TGFOP:
Herbal and grassy Darjeeling, which quickly gets bitter if brewed to long.

2010 Dönnoff Dellchen Riesling GG
Pale straw yellow. Apples, minerals and some floral notes. Layered. Fresh acidity but balanced and refined for 2010 Riesling. Lemons and apples on the palate, long finish. Refined. 93+

2003 Quinta de la Rosa Berry's own selection Vintage Port:
Deep ruby. Cherries, plums and figs. Intense. Fresh acidity, not that full bodied, but richness of 03 Port and rounded fruit. Good length. 88

Top 50 wines tasted in 2012






Its time for the inevitable. A look back on what the year of 2012 brought to the table. Some wines have been tasted several times this year, some have been tasted earlier, and some for the first time. When I looked through the thousands of tasting notes, it's pretty clear that I'm spoiled rotten. And teher are a staggering amount of excellent wines that are not even here. Some wines are only juice and will outlast me, others at peak or just off it. It's a lot of French wines, but that is also what I taste by far the most of. These are listed as they are now, and some will undoubtedly change place if retasted in the years to come. Every year I say its impossible to top the previous, but this list? I think that would be difficult.....

1900 Setubal, 1948 Port, 1905, 27 and 66 Madeira






1948 Stump Martinez Vintage Port:
(Norwegian Monopoly bottling) Pale garnet, lots of sediments. Nuts, cherries and redcurrants. Scented. Fresh acidity, elegant and almost creamy texture, even if the alcohol is behind. Superb texture, long and elegant finish. 95

1900 JM Fonsecha Setubal:
Brown with golden rim. Caramel, butter, orange marmalade, nuts and mint. Sweet palate with fresh and managing acidity, long, but burnt caramel finish. 90

1966 D'Oliveiras Verdelho Reserva:
Deep amber, golden rim. Nuts, dried apricots, and some Christmas spices. Fresh acidity, refreshing with a somewhat lean palate for Verdelho. Long and fresh finish. lovely but young. Every time I taste this I wonder why they don't hold on to it. Maybe the fruit isn't powerful enough, but it always feels too young.  91

1927 D'Oliveiras Bastardo Reserva:
Amber with golden hue. Floral, scented and some raspberries behind dried fruits and nuts. Fresh acidity, high even, mouthwatering, exotic, butter and touch of caramel. Long. Tasted this a few times and this bottle felt less obviously fruity than some of the others, maybe even better for it. 94

1905 D'Oliveiras Verdelho Reserva:
Amber with gold/orange rim. Nuts, citrus, dried fruits, floral, rich and intense. Fresh acidity, slightly hollow, but refreshing, very long finish. Another I've tasted a few times, quite 'typical' bottle. 93+
