97 Château d'Yquem

1997 Château d'Yquem;
Golden, botrytis, apricots, honey, apples, citrus, some floral and jasmine notes. Very complex, a bit hard to describe now, needs a lot of air. Fantastic balance and complexity, fresh acidity, refreshing, gorgeus texture and mouthfeel, fantastic length. Keep a long time. 96

02 Yquem

2002 Château d'Yquem;
Pale golden, apricots, vanilla, pineapples, one of those wines that the glass was all of a sudden empty, and you just experienced that it heightened the conversation without being the conversation. It's a delight that that can still happen, even with a Yquem in the glass. I'm about 91 on that.

1952 Climens

1952 Château Climens;
Top shoulder fill. Amber, pure honey, some polish and wax, very mature and not that complex nose. Quite fresh acidity, not that sweet any more, gives more on the palate, getting more complex with air, very long finish. 90

Broadbent: A so-so sample in 1954, and at the château, tasted ex-cask it was good but I preferred Coutet. Nine far more complimentary notes between 1959 and 1982 and different bottling's. Good but not great, though without much room for improvement. 1982 ****

70 Climens

1970 Château Climens;
Golden, towards amber. Camphor, butter fudge, caramel, honey, heavy nose. Fresh acidity, surprisingly lean body compared to the nose, good if not great, OK length. 83

90 Climens

1990 Château Climens;
Golden, honey, citrus, botrytis, fresh, some lime and flowers. Elegant body and texture, fresh acidity but not that great aftertatse, seems almost flabby. I find Climens lack acidity too often. 89

53 Château Doisy Daëne

1953 Château Doisy Daëne;
A level fill, superb bottle, reconditioned at the Château year ?? Golden with amber hue. Enormous complexity, creme brulée, apricots, caramel, dried fruits and prunes, difficult to describe correctly. Fresh acidity, almost dry now, beautiful texture and balance, very long finish. 92

Broadbent; Perfect peaches and cream, melted barley sugar bouquet 1986 ****

85 Gilette, a very rare Sauternes

1985 Château Gilette;
Golden, botrytis, pineapples, almost petroleum feel to it, flowers, jasmin, roses, Riesling feel to it. Good acidity, but not showing perfectly, feels like it needs time more than that it isn't there...... For now, 89

01 Suduiraut

2001 Chateau Suduiraut;
Golden, citrus, apples, some mineral notes, closed but showing refined notes, botrytis. Superb elegance, fresh and mouthwatering acidity, fantastic balance, complex underneath, pure and very long. Needs a lot of cellaring or decanting. 94

01 Lafaurie-Peyraguey

2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey;
Golden, a bit closed, some citrus, honey, botrytis and apricots beneath. Elegant texture and balance, the acidity is working to handle the fruit, citrus peel, fresh finish and long aftertaste. 89

98 Rieussec

1998 Château Rieussec;
Golden, fresh, elegant nose, botrytis, orange peel, citrus and floral notes. Kind of fatty, could have some more acidity to liven things up a bit, honey and bitter notes, I miss some freshness. 88

97 Guiraud

1997 Château Guiraud;
Golden, intense of apricots, dried fruit and flowers, heavy honey, botrytis and canned peras, some floral notes and roses in the back. Pure and elegant, nice acidity, slightly hollow mid palate and some bitter notes in the finish. 87

99 Fargues

1999 Château de Fargues;
Golden, quite closed, orange marmalade, apricots, honey, some almonds and botrytis. Nice balance, fresh acidity, quite fat texture, at this point a bit short. 88

Visiting Vega-Sicilia

Visiting Vega-Sicilia is not for everyone. It's like a fortress. Some say that it is even more difficult to get a visit at Vega-Sicilia than DRC. But with an invitation, everything went smoothly. It was perfect, and it has been a dream for years, ever since that bottle of 1962 Vega-Sicilia Unico that was totally mind-blowing. I was warmly welcomed by the Export Manager with the magnificent name of Puri, short for Purificacion Mancebo.

It was interesting to hear that the vineyard of Vega-Sicilia is some of the coolest in the area, and that they are some of the latest to pick the grapes. I have always wondered why, when Vega-Sicilia is the only truly legendary estate in Spain, and one of the most legendary in the world, why haven't the upstart tried to make something remotely similar? When other estates of Ribera del Duero are huge, alcoholic, over-oaked and over-extracted, lacking anything remotely similar to the complexity, layers, subtlety and sheer elegance of Vega-Sicilia. It's like trying to create a new Cameron Diaz, and to do that, you start out with Sylvester Stallone.

The altitude of the vineyards are high, 700 metres above the sea, and even in June when I visited, the wind was still cool. Vinification is going back to the more old school as so many do now in Bordeaux as well, out with stainless steel, and fermentation in huge old oak vats. Vertical presses are back, it seems they have pressed the grapes more gently the whole time anyway, invention is not always for the better.

I tasted some Oremus wines as well, but I will only write about the wines from Spain.

2006 Pintia, Toro;
Almost opaque, very deep colour. Some spices, pine trees, pine nuts, dark berries, black- and blueberries, some leather and licquorice. Nice balance, good acidity, tannins like falling snow, slightly rustic feel to it, still elegant, strange combination that works very well, slightly hollow mid way and a long length. 88

2005 Alion, Ribera del Duero;
Deep ruby, pure fruit, some spices and licquorice, red berries, blueberries, complex and young. Silky tannins, fresh acidity and superb finesse, very elegant and balanced, medium body and fruit intensity, good length. 88

2004 Vega-Sicilia Valbuena;
Deep ruby, ruby rim. More closed, needs more time to open, some licquorice, blueberries, cherries, blackcurrant's, vanilla, very complex. Fresh and lively, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, perfect balance, very long finish. 91

1999 Vega-Sicilia Unico;
Ruby with ruby rim, chocolate, some coffee, licquorice, cherries and blackcurrant's, leather and vanilla, enormous complexity, cedar touch, intense and beautiful. Fantastic balance and elegant acidity with ripe tannins, needs years and years in the cellar or a really thorough decanting, long finish. 95

By the way, Puri could tell me that the 62 Unico is also the favorite of the owner of Vega-Sicilia, Pablo Alvarez.

I always look forward for my next bottle of Unico.

98 Joguet, Chinon Clos de la Dioterie

1998 Charles Joguet, Chinon Clos de la Dioterie;
I have been looking for a bottle of this wine for many years, as it has been described as one of the best Chinons, and because I have not been that impressed with the reds of Loire before. Stunning bright garnet color, elegant, almost Margaux like nose, minerals, leather, violets, perfumed, bell peppers, blackcurrant's, some mint and refreshing notes. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, mouthwatering, elegant texture, very good balance, raspberries in the finish, long length. I hope to find a few more bottles of this. 90

76 WS BA

1976er Joh. Christoffel Jr. (Christoffel-Prüm) Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese;
Golden, botrytis, apples, pineapples, citrus, intense, not that complex and refined (as usual). Fruity, easy to like style, acidity could, and should be fresher, butter fudge, caramel, too short for a BA. 84

A producer that is easy to like, but when you study the wines, they lack quite a bit.

2001 Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin

2001 Armand Rousseau, Gevrey- Chambertin;
Bright ruby, strawberries, elegant, some spices, touch of vanilla, floral and fruit driven. Fresh acidity, few and ripe tannins, pure, elegant and refreshing. One of my favorite producers, but next to Jayer, it really have trouble showing. 89

The legendary Henri Jayer

1993 Henri Jayer, Vosne-Romanée;
Bright ruby. A purity like no other, strawberries, some spicy notes, floral, touch of vanilla from cask's, roses and violets. Fresh acidity, pure, intense, beautiful, extremely refreshing, youthful, only starting to develop, enormous length, elegant and subtle, even more floral and spice garden with air. 96

Beautiful 1966 Ch Giscours

1966 Château Giscours;

Low neck will, ruby with brick rim. Floral, cedar, cassis, fruity, perfumed, intense, bell peppers and strawberries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fleshy texture, elegant, plums, ripe cherries in the finish, even minerals, very long length. 93

Broadbent: Several notes. Never seems to have shed its initial greenness, my best note February 86. Excellent nose. Dry, lean **

Seems to me it has now shed it's troublesome youth and I do not recognize much of Broadbent's notes from 1986. It seems to have needed an extra 25 years of cellaring!

1966 Château Cheval Blanc

1966 Château Cheval Blanc;
Mid shoulder fill, ruby with brick rim. Coffee, plums, darker berries, figs, floral and violets, very complex, difficult to describe, ripe and pure, tea and hint of herbs. Perfect texture and balance, fresh acidity and ripe tannins, superb floral notes, but not the elegance of those in Ch. Margaux, more exotic, sweeter type, passion fruit, extremely long finish. Enormously easy to enjoy. 97

Broadbent: I have always preferred the 66 to the great 47 for though the latter is hugely impressive the 66 is the epitome of elegance. Apart from a cask sample in 67, with an understandable touch of greenness an tannins, evolving splendidly through the 80's, 5 star appearing several times......... This is what claret is all about. *****

1934 Château Cheval Blanc

1934 Château Cheval Blanc;
Chr. Stausholm bottling (Denmark) and cork stated Stausholm as well. Top shoulder fill. Garnet with brick/ orange rim. Coffee, anise, leather, redcurrant's, cigars, cassis, hint of herbs, sweet tones and ripe notes. Fresh acidity, tannins nearly gone, rich texture, elegant even so, very mature, long length. 94

Broadbent: Arguably the finest, certainly- in my experience- one of the most reliable of the 34's. First noted rich, delicate, ethereal, exquisite, in 1978, and several admiring notes since, including a glowing coloured magnum in 1986, its beautiful bouquet, ripe, subsiding gently but not decayed. At best *****

1928 Château Margaux

1928 Château Margaux;
Mid shoulder fill, ruby with thin brick rim. Tobacco, cigars, spicy, cedar, compact, licorice, needs a lot of time to open, coffee, caramel, tea, citrus, after two hours some floral notes in the back. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, intense, elegant texture, does not give that much on the palate at first, again after two hours, magnificent fruit, superb balance and exceptional long finish. After four hours, even more elegant fruit, pure violets, even more refreshing in the mouth, better body and texture, a magnificent experience, perfect balance, and it sat in the mouth until the next morning. 98

Broadbent:Eight notes. Slight bottle variation but mainly very good: deeply coloured; sweet, singed, cedary, fragrant bouquet; sweet tanned and tannic. This was the first time in 1976 I used the expression 'iron fist in velvet glove'. .....a mouthfilling powerhouse. Most recent, rather too sweet and caramelly; rich yet still very tannic. 2000 At best *****

Very interesting to see how some notes that is different and atypical like caramel in a read wine actually was still there, but it was not as sweet I found. But it needed many hours in the glass to shine.

From Château Margaux:

1928 Château Margaux
Château Margaux 1928 is an outstandingly great wine and is today perhaps superior to the 1929, since it has, on the whole, aged better. There is more consistency in the bottles, the wine has lost its hardness, but has kept an absolutely extraordinary freshness and richness. It may not have the great finesse of a bottle of 1929, but its freshness is far greater. Without going as far as to say that we still have to wait to drink it, we think its potential for ageing is almost in tact. Like 1870 and 1900, this wine seems to have been made for eternity...

1929 Château Margaux

1929 Château Margaux;
High shoulder fill, very light color through the bottle. Pale amber in the glass, acetone, caramel, nuts, enormous volatility, and in the back ground a Madeira Bual, very fresh acidity.

Broadbent; Ten notes. A variable performer, but at its best characteristically fragrant and bursting with charm. Attractive colour, not deep; delicious bouquet, Margaux crystallized violets; sweet, very rich, fragrant. At best *****

Seems a far cry from our bottle, and Mr Pontallier warned me about the massive bottle variations on this wine, which Broadbent also mention above. Hope there will be a second chance someday.

And some words from Ch Margaux:

1929 Château Margaux
Ah, 1929 ! That legend of vintages that will always be remembered as the year of the century. Its reputation was made all the more glorious by the fact that immediately after, the 1930s were really catastrophic, and then war broke out It was not until 1945 that anything comparable in quality was produced. It was only a space of sixteen years, but everyone had the genuine impression that it had been a century... Château Margaux 1929 is indeed a marvellous wine, whose bottles have unfortunately become inconsistent. We had the opportunity, a few years ago, to open a few at the same time. Around one out of three was in decline, another was fine, but a bit tired, and the last one... just marvellous ! An incomparable, indescribable finesse; a silky, long, delicate feeling on the palate... Sheer happiness...

1934 Château Margaux, perfection!

1934 Château Margaux;
What a beautiful vintage this is! Mid shoulder fill, garnet all over. Floral from start, pure, violets, leather, more intense, prunes, figs, butter and animal fat, this one quite open from the start. Rich mouth-feel and texture, fresh acidity, ripe tannins that are very well mannered, refreshing, elegant, this is more difficult to describe, but pure comes to mind together with enormous complexity and freshness, fantastic length, minutes after minutes. 98

Broadbent: Fifteen notes. Despite some poor, doubtless badly cellared bottles, my favorite 34. So very Margaux, yet the decay of the 30's noted quite early, even in the mid 50's, certainly by the early 70's. But it soldiers on. More recently at Wagner's first Margaux tasting in 1997: rich, biscuity bouquet- though faisandé. Sweet on the palate , assertive fruit, very tannic. Most recently, richly flavoured bottle. Bouquet very attractive but just misses greatness. 2000 ****

And a few words from Ch. Margaux:

1934 Château Margaux
At last, a very good vintage ! The only one in the 1930s Château Margaux 1934 is still superb. It displays a deep, dense colour and a fine, fresh, complex bouquet. On the palate, it is powerful and rich with tannins coming to the fore, but drying a little in the finish. The quality of the bottles is now inconsistent, but most of the magnums are very good. It is obviously a wine to drink now, which in the future can only lose the wonderful qualities it has now.

Peace year Ch Margaux, 1945

1945 Château Margaux;
It's always very special to try a wine from 1945. Again, a bit worried about the mid shoulder fill. Ruby, with brick rim, very mature, leather, apples, plums, takes about ten to fifteen minutes before the floral and violet notes arrive, figs, fine black tea, think the tea department at Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly, some volatile high-notes in the back, not quite the 61 but a beauty. Minerals. Fresh acidity, elegant texture, ripe tannins, elegant body as well, not too intense on the palate, all about layers and elegance, not power and fruit, long finish. 93

Broadbent: A magnificent wine. Nothing fragile and feminine about this 45, at least not in its early years. From start, very deep in colour with a beautiful richness and intensity; in the 1970s with Latour-like massiveness and tannin. Its fragrance, the hallmark of Margaux, being variously described as ripe mulberry, crystallized violets, cedar, cigar box, creamy- and always glorious. On the palate its initial tannins ameliorating, now soft and velvety. 2000 *****

Some change during the last ten years it seems in the style, but I have a feeling that our bottle was not a perfect one.

And a few words from Ch Margaux:

1945 Château Margaux
1945 is a legendary year! In symbolic fashion, a great vintage came along to celebrate the end of the Second World War Château Margaux 1945 is a very powerful, concentrated, mature wine, with a fine, complex bouquet, which is more elegant than the 1947 and 1949, which seem to have been more affected by the extreme heat of the summer. This wine possesses all the attributes of an outstandingly great vintage of its generation. The tannic freshness remains present on the palate and will very probably enable it to age even longer. (September 2002)

Gorgeous 61 Château Margaux

1961 Château Margaux;
Finally! I read about this wine probably ten years ago, and hoped it would some day come my way. It was described as the last great wine of the old dynasty of Ch. Margaux, and it has kept an intriguing allure for me ever since. Worryingly low fill!? Just above mid shoulder, ruby wit thin orange rim. Staring out with intense floral notes, violets, blackcurrant's, plums, cigar, tobacco, perfumed, seductive and flirting, with another ten minutes, licorice, layers upon layers. Very elegant body and texture, fresh acidity, ripe tannins, beautiful balance, enormous elegance, after two hours gaining in body, getting more fruit, turns out the low level can't have had any negative influence, its difficult to believe there can be a much better bottle, after even more time, mint, eucalyptus, opens up hugely, enormous complexity, rose-garden, figs, long and elegant finish. Getting even better after five hours. 97

Broadbent: Another splendid 61, first tasted in the autumn of 64. It was lovely wine then though green and of course unready. First really noted its fragrance and elegance developing through the 70s. In 81, rich, complex, harmonious, wonderful sap- 20 years of development ahead. Not long after I thought it a 5-star perfect drink........ in June 01 ***** at peak but will soldier on.

Interesting to see it described as green and course in the 60's!

And here is what Ch Maragux says:

1961 Château Margaux
It has sometimes been said that 1961 was the greatest vintage since 1900. Our memory does not always serve us well, but there is no doubt that this vintage displays quite extraordinary qualities, which we were not to find again, in any case, until the 1982 vintage. 1961 not only benefited from remarkable weather conditions, but also from the first achievements of what was called "modern oenology" under the inspiration of Professor Ribereau Gayon and Doctor Emile Peynaud. Château Margaux 1961 is a sumptuous wine, at the same time tender, harmonious, rich, very dense and full of freshness. Its bouquet is unique : over the smell of undergrowth, so characteristic of the great wines of that era, comes a layer of indescribable fruity and floral fragrance... Smelling this wine is a moment of unforgettable excitement, of pure emotion ! The sensations that come through on the palate are a harmonious match to the aromatic festival on the nose : its tannic density asserts itself smoothly and delicately, the finish is a strong and yet tender caress. A really wonderful wine. Today, the 1961 has lost none of its freshness, even though the magnums are starting to show more consistency than the bottles. Of course, it can be opened now, but it was built for eternity... (February 2007)

61 Latour a Pomerol, dream wine

1961 Château Latour a Pomerol;
Lafite-Bruxelles bottling, bottom neck fill. Ruby with garnet rim, cassis, floral, leather, cigars, violets, all the aromas that can be found in a perfect Bordeaux. Superb acidity, ripe tannins, intense, complex, enormous texture, some herbs and bell peppers, youthful and yet aged like only great wines can be, will easily last another 20 years, exceptional finish. Magnificent! 99-100

Broadbent: Two notes, both excellent, sweet, fleshy, a fabulous mouthful. Pomerol at it's best. *****

1952 Pontet-Canet

1952 Château Pontet-Canet;
Cruse bottling, very top shoulder fill, garnet with brick/ orange rim. Leather, coffee, tea, chocolate, earthy, cherries and red berries. Good acidity, ripe tannins, some metallic touches, bark and cherry tree wood (think when you were young and climbing in the cherry trees) and figs. More expressive on the nose than on the palate. 89

Broadbent has no notes on this one, but rates 1952 as a **-**** star vintage. The growing season was very satisfactory up until September which was cold and unsettled. The harvest was fairly early and I suspect the the unripeness of some of the crop is responsible for its variability. Best in Graves and on the Right Bank, harder, more unyielding in the Médoc.

05 Coche-Dury

2005 Coche-Dury, Meursault;
